A traditional French heirloom, Bacalan de Rennes was listed by Vilmorin in 1867 and historically cultivated in regions such as Saint-Brieuc and Bordeaux. Well suited to the mild, maritime climate of France’s western coast, it produces early, ox-heart-shaped green heads with delicately savoyed leaves and excellent flavour. Leaves can be harvested individually or as a whole head, offering flexibility in the kitchen and garden. This dependable cool-season variety remains a favourite in France today, appreciated for its cold tolerance, tender texture, and reliable performance across a range of growing conditions. Suitable for both home gardens and market-scale production.

Likes rich well drained soil with pH above 6.0 and sunny position, keep well watered. Will cross-pollinate with other Brassicas, to keep seed pure grow only one Brassica. Sow early spring, end of summer to winter, mature plants tolerate frost.
