Originating in Germany and brought to the United States before World War II—reportedly smuggled inside a camera—this variety was rediscovered in 1968 by organic gardening pioneer Malcolm Beck, growing wild on his property in San Antonio, Texas. Tracing its roots to a German immigrant who shared the seed locally, it became a regional favourite known for its productivity and culinary versatility.
Also called "Snapping Okra" for the audible snap when harvested, plants grow vigorously—up to 6 feet tall—and thrive in hot, sunny conditions. Excellent for frying, stewing, and gumbo, this unique variety is a must-have for gardeners seeking history, flavour, and resilience in one remarkable plant.

Annual bush to 1.2m, taken from Ethiopia in pre-historic times. Also known as Gumbo. Use similar growing conditions as tomatoes. Thrives in well drained soils in full sunlight. Harvest all pods when young at 7-10cm. Use fresh or dried in soups and stews. Sow after last frost.
