Sebago is a popular white-fleshed potato with a smooth texture and excellent versatility in the kitchen. With a balance between waxy and starchy qualities, it performs well whether boiled, mashed, roasted, or fried. Originally bred for Australian conditions, Sebago grows best in rich, well-drained soil with full sun. Harvest once the plants flower and the skins have set for best storage and flavour.
Before planting, slice larger tubers into sections, making sure each piece carries at least one or two strong eyes (sprouts). Allow the cut surfaces to dry and callous over for a day or two to reduce the risk of rotting in the soil. Avoid cutting pieces too small — a good chunk of tuber helps support strong early growth and better yields.
Potatoes are propagated from “seed potatoes” — whole tubers or pieces specifically grown for planting. Certified seed potatoes are produced under controlled conditions to ensure varietal purity and freedom from disease. They offer stronger vigour and higher yields compared to supermarket potatoes, making them the preferred choice for reliable, healthy crops.

Certified Seed Potatoes
Potatoes are grown from "seed potatoes" — whole tubers or pieces specially produced for planting. To prepare for planting, cut larger tubers into sections, ensuring each piece has at least one or two healthy eyes. Allow the cut surfaces to dry and form a callous for a day or two to help prevent rotting once planted.
Plant potatoes in rich, well-drained soil in a sunny position. Tubers should be placed around 10–15cm deep, with shoots pointing upward, and spaced about 30cm apart. As plants grow, mounding soil around the stems (known as hilling) helps protect developing tubers and encourages a larger harvest.
Potatoes are ready to harvest once plants flower and the skins of the tubers have firmed. Starting with certified seed potatoes gives the best results — producing healthier plants, stronger growth, and higher yields compared to planting supermarket potatoes.
