Garlic

Tasmanian Purple Seeds

(Allium sativum)

Biodynamic certified through Demeter!
Tasmanian Purple is a hardneck garlic variety within the Turban group, likely originating from New Zealand Purple. It produces large, flattened bulbs approximately 6–7 cm in diameter, with skins that exhibit purple-red splotches and stripes when freshly harvested, curing to a mainly white appearance with dark to pale purple stripes. Each bulb contains 10–14 large cloves arranged in a distinctive pattern, with outer cloves being larger and inner ones slightly smaller. The flavor is rich and sweet with a mild heat when raw, developing a nutty richness upon sauteéing or roasting, especially when grown in cooler regions. This cultivar is adaptable, thriving in various climates, including Tasmania and mild to warm areas. It matures quickly as temperatures rise, so timely harvesting is essential to prevent splitting skins. While generally non-bolting, in some seasons, it may produce weak scapes that should be monitored. Well suited to Australian conditions. Harvest early to mid season, 4 to 5 months.

Native to central Asia and used for thousands of years, Garlic is a flavourful and versatile food that offers a range of health benefits and is widely used in cooking and traditional medicine. It also contains compounds such as allicin which has antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties.
