This remarkable member of the Brassicaceae family is a multipurpose crop cultivated primarily in East Africa for over 4000 years. Also known as Abyssinian mustard, it is valued for its edible leaves and seeds. The lush, slightly serrated leaves are rich in vitamins A, C, and K, along with calcium and iron, making them an excellent addition to a nutritious diet.
Native to the Ethiopian highlands, it thrives in poor soils and dry conditions, making it a reliable food source in challenging climates.
Traditionally, the leaves have been used in stews and other dishes, while the seeds are pressed into oil for cooking, lighting, and biodiesel. The plant grows up to 1.5 metres tall, producing flowers that attract pollinators and contribute to its sustainability.
It is typically grown as an annual, though in favourable climates, it may behave as a short-lived biennial. Its robust nature and adaptability allow for multiple harvests during a growing season.
