An ancient grain-like edible seed in the Polygonaceae family, buckwheat has been cultivated for over 8000 years across Europe and Asia. Planted next to pumpkins and squashes, it can improve their growth. Buckwheat’s long taproot can extract nutrients from deep soil layers, which are then returned to the surface when the plants decompose. Its prolific seed production and nutrient retrieval make it an excellent green cover crop between vegetable rotations. Buckwheat flowers attract beneficial insects as a nectar source.
